Who

Three-year old boy

Problem

AB's’s parents noticed that AB was sometimes struggling to hear them and he was suffering with recurring colds and ear aches. They were also concerned that his snoring during sleep was affecting his breathing.

Diagnosis

Mr Tony Owa was able to fully assess AB’s ear, nose and throat and identified that the tonsils and adenoids were significantly enlarged. This was causing Alfie to be intermittently obstructing his breathing during sleep. At ear examination, Alfie was found to be suffering with chronic otitis media with effusion (OME) otherwise known as glue ear. This build-up of fluid in the middle ear was the primary course of the impaired hearing. At the same appointment, Alfie underwent hearing tests to determine the extent of the hearing loss.

Mr Tony explained that AB’s hearing was impaired to such extent, it would have felt like trying to hear sounds under water since the air in the middle ear space had disappeared

Mr Tony thoroughly discussed with Alfie’s parents, the all of the options for treatment and relief of AB’s symptoms

Treatment

Two weeks later, Mr Tony Owa performed the removal of AB’s tonsils and adenoids. He inserted grommets into his ears to drain away the fluid from the middle ear and allow the ear drums to work normally.

The operation lasted less than fifty minutes and within three hours, AB was sitting up in the hospital bed, eating and drinking and playing with his toys.

Outcome

Mr Tony Owa sees AB for regular hearing tests and check-ups to monitor the grommets and overall speech and developmental progress of his following the treatment.
