Teacher frustrated by hoarseness and voice problems

The throat is the passage through to the stomach and lungs containing the pharynx and upper part of the oesophagus, the larynx, and the trachea. The voice is produced by sound generated by air passed through partially closed soft and moisture vocal cord with further modification of the sound by the upper airway particularly the tongue, teeth and lips.

Who

55 years old female

Problem

Mrs G had been suffering with years of intermittent hoarseness in her voice. She is a teacher and regularly found that towards the end of a long school term her voice would become strained.

Diagnosis

Mrs G consulted with Mr Tony Owa privately and following a thorough history of the problem, she was examined with the flexible laryngoscope as an outpatient. She had previously had this performed but no diagnosis had been made. However on this occasion, she was found to have a left vocal cord polyp.

Treatment

After a full discussion of the possible causes and treatment options, she decided to have the polyp removed and to undergo speech therapy to retrain her vocal use.

She subsequently had a microlaryngoscopy with removal of the polyp, a procedure lasting less than 30 minutes. Mrs G was then discharged home a few hours later. After a few days of vocal rest, she started to speak with much more strength.

Outcome

Two months later, with the help and support of Mr Tony Owa’s speech therapist, Mrs G is no longer suffering with hoarseness and is back at work.
